Q & A

TNF1SL1Q05 is an interface board for Huawei transmission equipment, for the OSN 1800. It plugs into the shelf and does its work between the client interfaces and the shelf’s cross-connect.

What it presents. 4 STM-1 ports, on LC connectors.

The code in brackets is the optical interface class and it decides whether the link will work. This is L-1.1: a long haul interface at around 1310 nm with a reach of roughly 40 km. These classes come from an ITU standard, not a Huawei convention, and they are not interchangeable. A short-haul interface will not reach a long-haul distance, and a long-haul transmitter driven into a short fibre overloads the receiver at the far end, producing errors that look exactly like a fault. Match the class at both ends to the fibre you actually have, and where the run is short and the interface is long-haul, fit an attenuator.

How to read a Huawei board part number, and why nearly right is wrong. These codes are structured rather than arbitrary: a platform prefix, a hardware version, a short functional mnemonic and then a trailing feature code. The shelf’s software matches against that whole string, which is why a part number that differs by one character is not a near-enough substitute. The trailing digits in particular often encode the thing most likely to break interoperability, such as the error-correction scheme or the optical variant, and two boards whose codes differ only there can be the same rate, the same platform and the same generation and still refuse to work as a pair across a span.

If this is a spare, read the label off the card that is in the shelf. On equipment that has been maintained for a few years, the installed hardware and the paperwork have usually diverged: boards get swapped under pressure, revisions change, and the as-built record is rarely updated. The part number on the card in the slot is the authoritative answer and the original order is not. It takes a minute and it avoids the most common failure in spares purchasing, which is buying the board that was specified rather than the board that is actually fitted.

It is also worth deciding what this board is for before you order it. A spare held against a failure, a card for a planned expansion and a replacement for something already faulty are three different purchases with different urgencies and different tolerances for substitution. For a true spare, matching the installed hardware exactly matters most. For an expansion, there may be a newer and better-supported board that does the same job, and we would rather tell you that than sell you the old one.

Where the OSN 1800 stands today is better than the part number suggests. This is a current Huawei platform, not a legacy one. The OSN 9800 line was refreshed as recently as 2024 and Huawei still describes its newest member as a flagship WDM product, and the OSN 1800 is the metro counterpart in the same generation. A card for one of these is a card for a line that is still being developed rather than one being wound down.

The honest caveat is practical rather than commercial. Huawei does not publish end-of-support dates outside a logged-in support account, so nobody selling you this part, ourselves included, can quote you a hard support-end date. What can be said is that the platform is current and the part is not an orphan.

One UK rule worth knowing about, and who it actually binds. Under the UK’s Designated Vendor Direction, designated public telecoms providers, meaning the large operators running public networks, were required to stop using Huawei high data rate transmission equipment in their core networks from 31 December 2025, a date that has now passed, and must remove Huawei from their 5G networks entirely by 31 December 2027.

If you are one of those operators, that is the governing fact about this product and nothing here changes it. If you are not, and most buyers of transmission hardware are not, the Direction does not apply to you and there is no UK legal barrier to buying or running this equipment. It is narrowly scoped to designated providers and public networks. Worth stating plainly, because it gets quoted as though it were a blanket ban, and it is not.

Three things to confirm before ordering a board. The subrack, because board support depends on the shelf and some Huawei subrack variants have no electrical cross-connect at all, which makes tributary and line boards ordered for them unable to carry traffic. The software release, because support is gated by release as well as by slot. And whether the optics are included, where the board takes pluggable modules, since Huawei equipment generally expects Huawei-coded optics and that is a frequent gap between two otherwise comparable quotes. Tell us the shelf and the release and we will confirm this board is supported in that combination before you commit.

Green Code Technologies supplies Huawei transmission hardware, including line and tributary boards, cross-connect and control cards, optics and the shelves they go in. We are a supplier of Huawei alongside HPE, Dell, Cisco, Samsung and Netgear, and we would rather confirm a part against Huawei’s own documentation than sell you the wrong one, which on OSN 1800 equipment is worth doing. Send us the platform, the subrack and the software release and we will come back with a straight answer.
