SM-ES3-24-P is an interface module for Cisco routers: enhcd EtherSwitch Service Module, L2/L3 switching, 23 * 10/100 FE ports, 1 * 10/100/1000 GE ports, Enhanced POE, Cisco EnergyWise technology.

What it presents. 100 Fast Ethernet ports. The port count is the obvious figure; the one worth checking alongside it is whether the chassis can actually drive them all at line rate, because on most modular routers the fabric or the slot bandwidth, not the card, is what sets the real ceiling.

The three things that decide whether a card like this will work, in order of how often they are got wrong. First the chassis: a card seats mechanically in families it is not supported in, and on some platforms it will be recognised and then refuse to pass traffic. Second the software release, because card support is gated by release and a router held back on an older version will reject hardware that is otherwise perfectly compatible — the symptom looks like a hardware fault and is not one. Third the slot, because high-throughput cards often require specific slots with the fabric bandwidth to feed them, and the chassis will not tell you that until the card is in.

Three questions worth answering before any router purchase, whatever the model. What the throughput requirement actually is with your feature set enabled, rather than the datasheet figure measured without it. Whether the features you need are licensed as well as present, since on most platforms security and performance are separate entitlements. And how many slots or ports you will need in three years, because adding capacity is cheap and replacing a chassis is not.

Tell us the chassis, the software release it is running and which slot you intend, and we will confirm this card is supported in that combination before you order. If you are buying it as a spare, the part number on the card already fitted is a better guide than the original order paperwork, which on a router that has been maintained for a few years has usually drifted.
