The software release on a router gates more than people expect. It decides which line cards are supported, which features can be licensed, and in some cases which optics are recognised. A router deliberately held back on an older release because nobody wanted to risk the upgrade will refuse new hardware that is otherwise perfectly compatible, and the symptom looks like a hardware incompatibility rather than a software one. If you are planning an expansion, settle the release first and buy the cards against it.
Two further things worth checking. Whether the platform has the flash and memory to hold the image you are moving to, because on older hardware that is frequently the binding constraint and better discovered before the purchase than during the upgrade window. And whether you are entitled to the release: on most vendors the right to run software and the right to upgrade it are separate entitlements, so equipment can be perfectly licensed to operate and still not licensed to move to a newer version.
Three questions worth answering before any router purchase, whatever the model. What the throughput requirement actually is with your feature set enabled, rather than the datasheet figure measured without it. Whether the features you need are licensed as well as present, since on most platforms security and performance are separate entitlements. And how many slots or ports you will need in three years, because adding capacity is cheap and replacing a chassis is not.
