MX10K-LC2101-IR

MX10K-LC2101-IR is a line card for Juniper MX10008 routers: JNP10008/MX10008 24x100G/24x40G/96x10G Line Card, IR mode.

The three things that decide whether a card like this will work, in order of how often they are got wrong. First the chassis: a card seats mechanically in families it is not supported in, and on some platforms it will be recognised and then refuse to pass traffic. Second the software release, because card support is gated by release and a router held back on an older version will reject hardware that is otherwise perfectly compatible — the symptom looks like a hardware fault and is not one. Third the slot, because high-throughput cards often require specific slots with the fabric bandwidth to feed them, and the chassis will not tell you that until the card is in.

What this platform is for. The MX10008 is a universal routing platform from Juniper’s MX line, used across provider edge, aggregation and enterprise core roles. Knowing the family’s intended role is usually more useful than the part number when you are working out whether something fits: a chassis built for one job will do another, but rarely well, and the cost of that mismatch tends to show up as throughput or feature limits rather than as an outright failure.

Three questions worth answering before any router purchase, whatever the model. What the throughput requirement actually is with your feature set enabled, rather than the datasheet figure measured without it. Whether the features you need are licensed as well as present, since on most platforms security and performance are separate entitlements. And how many slots or ports you will need in three years, because adding capacity is cheap and replacing a chassis is not.

Worth knowing if you have not been following it: Juniper is now part of HPE. Hewlett Packard Enterprise completed its acquisition of Juniper Networks on 2 July 2025, and Juniper’s former chief executive now leads the combined HPE Networking business. HPE continues to list the Juniper lines, MX and PTX included, in its own portfolio.

For buying purposes that is mostly good news and it is directly relevant here, because we supply HPE as well. What the closing announcement did not do is make specific commitments about how long individual Juniper product lines will be sold or supported, so we are not going to imply any. If the lifecycle of a particular model matters to your decision, ask us and we will confirm it against HPE and Juniper’s current notices rather than guess from the acquisition.

Tell us the chassis, the software release it is running and which slot you intend, and we will confirm this card is supported in that combination before you order. If you are buying it as a spare, the part number on the card already fitted is a better guide than the original order paperwork, which on a router that has been maintained for a few years has usually drifted.
