Q & A

ES1SFIB128K0 is a Huawei licence for the S-series chassis switch with an X-series LPU, covering forwarding table capacity. The S-series chassis switch with an X-series LPU is a modular campus switch, licensed against the line card rather than the chassis.

Huawei’s own description reads: X-series LPU FIB Resource License-128K.

It raises the size of the forwarding table the line card may hold. It sounds dry and it is the thing that actually stops a switch scaling: run out of FIB entries and routes start getting dropped.

Where this platform stands. The S-series chassis switch with an X-series LPU no longer appears in Huawei’s current catalogue, which now runs to the CloudEngine S16700, S12700H, S8700 and S5700-series switches. Huawei has published end-of-life announcements covering this generation, but we could not read the dates inside them: its lifecycle database sits behind a login. So we can tell you the line has been superseded and we can point at what replaced it, but we will not invent a date to fill the gap. If the exact dates matter — for an audit, an insurance question or a board paper — say so and we will get them confirmed through Huawei directly.

How a Huawei licence like this is actually delivered, which is where the friction lives. It is not a code you type into a web form. It arrives as a licence file tied to the specific chassis — its equipment serial number — and matched to a software release. Three consequences worth knowing before you order. The file will not work on a different chassis, so replacing hardware means a rehost rather than a reinstall. It has to match the release the box is running, so a file issued against one version can be refused by another. And new entitlement usually arrives as a replacement file covering the whole system rather than as a separate addition, so the existing file matters. That is why the first thing we ask for is the equipment serial number and the current licence file, not the part number.

Reading Huawei’s lifecycle language, since it is not the same as Cisco’s. Huawei uses four markers: EOM, when it stops accepting new orders including capacity expansions; LODSP, the last date to order spare parts; EOFS, when it stops developing new software patches; and EOS, when service and support stop altogether. The important part is that Huawei publishes no fixed interval between them, so you cannot work out an end-of-support date from an end-of-marketing date — which is precisely why we will not estimate one. Huawei commits to at least six months’ notice before EOM, and its lifecycle query tool returns “not announced” where no notice has been issued yet.

One thing the part number itself tells you. Huawei has run two naming conventions. The older one uses opaque internal codes like this part number: one line item per feature, per chassis or per slot, generally perpetual and tied to a specific software train, with no published key for decoding them. The newer one is readable and prefixed N1-, splitting a perpetual licence from an annual support subscription. Which convention a part number follows is a reliable signal of generation — an opaque code means a platform Huawei has largely moved past, an N1 code means the current commercial model.

None of that makes the part useless. A great deal of this equipment is still in service and still doing its job, and keeping a working network licensed is a perfectly reasonable thing to want — it is most of what we are asked for on these platforms.

Green Code Technologies supplies Huawei networking and the licensing that goes with it. Tell us the platform, the cards fitted and the software release, and we will confirm this part number is right before you order — and say so if something current would serve you better.
