About AMD EPYC on the DL385

The DL385 Gen10 is HPE’s AMD platform, and these are 1st Generation EPYC processors for it. EPYC’s pitch in this generation was core count and memory channels per socket: eight memory channels against the six on the Intel parts of the same era, and high core counts, which is why the platform suited virtualisation hosts and anything memory-bandwidth bound. A single EPYC socket also provides enough PCIe lanes that single-socket configurations are genuinely viable rather than a compromise.

Note that EPYC and Intel parts are not interchangeable in any way — different socket, different platform, different server. The DL385 takes EPYC; the DL380 does not.

This is a B21 standard option kit

The -B21 part number is HPE’s standard option kit: the processor with its heatsink and installation hardware, for fitting into a server you already own. That makes it the part for adding a processor, replacing a failed one, or upgrading in place. The matching -L21 is the factory-installed version ordered with a new configure-to-order server.

In a multi-socket server every processor must be the same model. Mixing is not supported, so if you are adding one, match the part already fitted and send us that part number so we can confirm it.

Worth checking before you order

• Ask us for the core count, clock and TDP before you order. We will confirm them from HPE’s documentation for this exact part number rather than have you work from a figure found elsewhere.
• EPYC parts fit the DL385 and nothing else in this range. They are not interchangeable with the Intel kits for the DL380 or DL360, whatever the model numbers look like.
• Memory is populated per processor. Plan the DIMM layout alongside the processor, since an unbalanced configuration costs real bandwidth.
• Update system firmware before or alongside a processor change. A server on older firmware may not recognise a newer stepping.
