What the M suffix means

The M denotes the medium memory tier: a raised per-socket memory ceiling above the standard version of the same processor. It is the part to choose when the standard 6140 cannot address as much memory as your sizing calls for, and it carries a price premium for that capability alone — the compute is the same. If your memory plan sits comfortably inside the standard part’s limit, ask us to quote the plain 6140 instead and keep the difference.

Generation, and why it matters here

This is a 1st Generation Xeon Scalable processor, the family Intel shipped as Skylake-SP. It shares the LGA3647 socket with the 2nd Generation parts (Cascade Lake, the 5200, 6200 and 8200 series), which means the two generations look interchangeable and are not always so: whether a particular server accepts both depends on its system board and its firmware level.

So if you are adding to or upgrading an existing machine, tell us what is already fitted and we will confirm the combination before you order. Gen10 processors are in no case interchangeable with Gen9 or with Gen10 Plus servers, which use different sockets.

This is a B21 standard option kit

The -B21 part number is HPE’s standard option kit: the processor with its heatsink and installation hardware, supplied for fitting into a server you already own. That makes it the part for adding a processor, replacing a failed one, or upgrading in place. The matching -L21 is the factory-installed version ordered with a new configure-to-order server. Buying a complete new server? Ask us to quote it with the processor already fitted.

Fitment

HPE lists this kit for the HPE ProLiant DL560 Gen10, the four-socket server in a 2U chassis — scale-up core count and memory capacity at half the rack height.

All processors in a 4-socket server must be the same model. Mixing different processors is not supported, so if you are adding one, match the part already fitted. Send us that part number and we will confirm it.

Worth checking before you order

• Ask us for the core count, clock and TDP before you order. We will confirm them from HPE’s documentation for this exact part number rather than have you work from a figure found elsewhere.
• Adding to an existing server? The new processor must match the fitted one exactly. Send us the part number already in the machine.
• Mixing processor generations in one server is a firmware question, not just a socket question. Confirm with us before combining Skylake and Cascade Lake parts.
• The M suffix is a memory-tier premium. If you do not need the raised memory ceiling, the standard 6140 does the same compute for less.
• Memory is populated per processor, across six channels per socket. An unbalanced DIMM layout costs real bandwidth, so plan the full memory configuration alongside the processor.
• Update system firmware before or alongside a processor change. A server on older firmware may not recognise a newer stepping.
