16 cores at 2 GHz is the middle of the range and where most general-purpose servers sensibly land: enough for a working virtualisation host or a mid-sized database without paying what the top bins cost.

It carries 22 MB of cache, which matters more than clock speed for workloads whose working set nearly fits in it — query-heavy databases and in-memory analytics especially.

The -B21 part number is HPE’s standard option kit: the processor with its heatsink and installation hardware, supplied for fitting into a server you already own. That makes it the right part for adding a processor, replacing a failed one, or upgrading in place. The matching -L21 is the factory-installed version ordered with a new configure-to-order server.

Worth checking before you order

• Adding a processor to a multi-socket server? Every processor in the machine must be the same model. Send us the part number already fitted and we will confirm the match.
• This is a LGA3647 part and will not fit a server built for a different socket, whatever the model numbers suggest.
• Memory is populated per processor. Plan the DIMM layout alongside the processor, since an unbalanced configuration costs real bandwidth.
