Processor kits are tied to a server generation, and the socket is only part of the story: two generations can share a socket and still not accept each other’s processors, because the system board and firmware decide what will actually run.

This is a B21 standard option kit

The -B21 part number is HPE’s standard option kit: the processor with its heatsink and installation hardware, supplied for fitting into a server you already own. That makes it the right part for adding a processor, replacing a failed one, or upgrading in place. The matching -L21 is the factory-installed version ordered with a new configure-to-order server.

Worth checking before you order

• Adding a processor to a multi-socket server? Every processor in the machine must be the same model. Send us the part number already fitted and we will confirm the match.
• At 205 W this is one of the higher-power parts in its range. Check the power supply configuration and whether the server needs the high-TDP heatsink rather than the standard one.
• This is a LGA3647 part and will not fit a server built for a different socket, whatever the model numbers suggest.
• Memory is populated per processor. Plan the DIMM layout alongside the processor, since an unbalanced configuration costs real bandwidth.
• Update system firmware before or alongside a processor change. A server on older firmware may not recognise a newer stepping.
