This is the 840397-L21 processor kit: an Intel Xeon Platinum 8158 for the HPE ProLiant DL560 Gen10.

Platinum is the top tier of the range: the highest core counts and the widest multi-socket scalability Intel offered in this generation. It is what you buy when one server has to carry a very large workload.

Generation, and why it matters here

This is a 1st Generation Xeon Scalable processor, the family Intel shipped as Skylake-SP. It shares the LGA3647 socket with the 2nd Generation parts (Cascade Lake, the 5200, 6200 and 8200 series), which means the two generations look interchangeable and are not always so: whether a particular server accepts both depends on its system board and its firmware level.

So if you are adding to or upgrading an existing machine, tell us what is already fitted and we will confirm the combination before you order. Gen10 processors are in no case interchangeable with Gen9 or with Gen10 Plus servers, which use different sockets.

This is an L21 factory-installed kit

The -L21 part number is HPE’s FIO (factory-installed option) kit, ordered alongside a configure-to-order server so the processor arrives already fitted with the matching heatsink and airflow parts. The equivalent -B21 is the standard option kit for a server you already have. The processor is the same either way; the supply route differs. Upgrading an existing machine rather than buying a new one? Ask us for the -B21 version.

Fitment

HPE lists this kit for the HPE ProLiant DL560 Gen10, the four-socket server in a 2U chassis — scale-up core count and memory capacity at half the rack height.

All processors in a 4-socket server must be the same model. Mixing different processors is not supported, so if you are adding one, match the part already fitted. Send us that part number and we will confirm it.

Worth checking before you order

• Ask us for the core count, clock and TDP before you order. We will confirm them from HPE’s documentation for this exact part number rather than have you work from a figure found elsewhere.
• Adding to an existing server? The new processor must match the fitted one exactly. Send us the part number already in the machine.
• Mixing processor generations in one server is a firmware question, not just a socket question. Confirm with us before combining Skylake and Cascade Lake parts.
• Memory is populated per processor, across six channels per socket. An unbalanced DIMM layout costs real bandwidth, so plan the full memory configuration alongside the processor.
• Update system firmware before or alongside a processor change. A server on older firmware may not recognise a newer stepping.
