What to check before you buy. Three things decide whether a server will suit the job. The generation, because the processors, memory and controllers that fit one generation generally do not fit the next even where the chassis looks identical. The drive configuration, because a chassis built for small form factor disks cannot take large form factor ones without a different cage and backplane. And how it is specified to be populated, since a second processor usually needs its own heatsink and may enable memory slots that are otherwise unusable. It is also worth asking what is physically included: rails, bezel, drive carriers and the remote management licence are all commonly sold separately from the chassis.

The HPE ProLiant DL560 is a four-socket server in a 2U chassis, which is its whole reason for existing: scale-up core count and memory capacity at half the rack height.

All 4 sockets are populated in this build, so the full memory capacity and the expansion slots tied to the upper processors are available rather than waiting on an upgrade.

What is in this configuration

The P816i-a storage controller

The P816i-a has sixteen internal ports rather than eight, which is the reason to choose it: it drives a high drive count directly without an expander. With cache and hardware RAID, it is the controller for a server that is mostly disks.

This server ships with registered memory

The -R suffix means RDIMM, registered memory, which is what mainstream ProLiant servers use. It allows far higher total capacity than unbuffered memory and it is what you want if the server will grow. Registered and unbuffered memory cannot be mixed, so any upgrade needs to be RDIMM too.

Power supplies, and whether this build is redundant

This build ships with 2 x 1600 W power supplies, which means it is genuinely redundant: lose one supply, or one feed, and the server keeps running. Worth feeding them from separate circuits if the rack allows it, since two supplies on one failed circuit protect against nothing.

Drive bays

These are 2.5-inch (SFF) bays. Small-form-factor bays give you more drives in the same chassis, which suits SSDs and anything that needs spindles or IOPS rather than raw terabytes. The bays are hot-plug, so a failed drive can be replaced with the server running.
