Cooling is the limit, not the socket. The same socket usually accepts processors the chassis cannot cool, so the thermal rating the server supports matters more than whether the part physically fits. A second processor also needs its own heatsink and often a higher-rated fan set, and some chassis require populated memory on the second bank before the processor is recognised.

About the Xeon E5 family

The E5 line was Intel’s mainstream server range before Xeon Scalable replaced it, and it is what most Gen9-era two-socket servers run. The v3 and v4 markers matter: v4 parts are the later, more efficient generation and generally offer more cores at the same power, but a given server supports one or the other depending on its firmware, not simply whichever is newer.

This is an L21 factory-installed kit

The -L21 part number is HPE’s FIO (factory-installed option) kit, ordered alongside a configure-to-order server so the processor arrives already fitted with its heatsink and airflow parts. The matching -B21 is the standard option kit for a server you already own. Same processor either way; the supply route differs. Upgrading an existing machine? Ask us for the -B21.

In a multi-socket server every processor must be the same model. Mixing is not supported, so if you are adding one, match the part already fitted and send us that part number so we can confirm it.

Worth checking before you order

• Ask us for the core count, clock and TDP before you order. We will confirm them from HPE’s documentation for this exact part number rather than have you work from a figure found elsewhere.
• The v3 and v4 generations are not freely interchangeable. A server supports one or the other depending on its system board and firmware, so check before mixing or upgrading across them.
• Memory is populated per processor. Plan the DIMM layout alongside the processor, since an unbalanced configuration costs real bandwidth.
• Update system firmware before or alongside a processor change. A server on older firmware may not recognise a newer stepping.
